The Willi Match
Each year in late August the California Brittany Club holds a fun match for club members and we especially encourage young handlers. Rescue dogs, spayed or neutered, your neighbor’s Britt – we don’t care. AKC papers are not required. Since there is no shortage of Brittanys that exceed the AKC standard height, in 2004 a new division was created called “Trop Grand” which is French for “Too Tall”. As you can see the Willi Match designed to please as many Brittany owners as possible. Although no AKC points are awarded, we still hire a professional judge or judge in training. Trophies are usually recycled - dug out of club member’s garages, closets, or wherever those old mementoes can be found. New labels are attached, and in many cases a little gold paint is sprayed on to make them look good.
Best of Breed takes home the Willi Trophy which is a perpetual trophy presented by Dr. & Mrs. Lloyd J. Harbaugh that has names dating back to 1962 (CH Freckles of San Diego CD owned by Charles & Marge Ayres). It is somewhat tarnished and the wood is worn, but it is a prized possession for the winner.
Best Opposite Sex winners takes home the BOS Trophy which is a perpetual trophy presented by Fred & Bonnie Coleman.
The event is followed by a huge pot luck and general membership meeting.
